Born in Johnston, Rhode Island, Edward T. Manton (1820-1893) moved to Fayette County, Texas in 1833. After enlisting in a Fayette County volunteer regiment in 1842, Manton helped quell the Mexican Army’s advances north after attacking San Antonio. He later joined Captain Nicholas Dawson’s volunteer regiment and survived the massacre at Salado Creek, where he was taken prisoner and incarcerated in Perote Prison in Mexico.
